Not waving but drowning...

I have always loved this poem and have it jotted down in several of my journals along with appropriate doodles along the sides...

Not waving But Drowning - by Stevie Smith

Nobody heard him, the dead man,
But still he lay moaning:
I was much further out than you thought
And not waving but drowning.

Poor chap, he always loved larking
And now he's dad
It must have been too cold for him
his heart gave way,
They said.

Oh, no no no, it was too cold always
(Still the dead one lay moaning)
I was much too far out all my life
And not waving but drowning.

This leaves much to ponder and wonder. What does it mean to you?

For me it seems a perfect description for the dark times in my life. those times when i feel like everything is totally overwhelming. Of course everyone gets times like that, but how many would be brave enough to admit when and to what extent it effects them. Society seems to have us so well programmed that we keep this dark side of us well covered. Is it not time to look within the darkness and see the treasures that lie there. Feeling down can have it's advantages too. We only need to seek within the dark for the gold hidden there :)
